What to Use to Scrub a Shower

Shower scrubbing can be one of the most laborious tasks in home cleaning. Here’s why: with use, a shower naturally accumulates what’s called soap scum. So, what exactly is soap scum?

What is Soap Scum?

Soap scum is a mixture of dirt, debris, residual soap, minerals naturally found in tap water, and even dead skin cells 👀🤮. Soap scum can stick to shower walls, glass doors, tile, tub, and the drain.

Essentially, soap scum can linger in the places that water and soap land in the shower. You’ll notice a higher concentration of soap scum at the base of the tub.

How to Identify Soap Scum

Run your hand across your tub or shower base. If you feel a gummy consistency along the surface as you wipe, you have soap scum. You’ll notice a clear difference between areas with no soap scum vs. areas with soap scum.

🧼 Areas with soap scum = a resistance when you slide your hand across the surface of the tub or tile.

✨ Areas without soap scum = smooth, with no resistance when you run your hand across the surface.

Once water minerals, soap, and dead skin cells dry, it begins to adhere to the surface, therefore becoming soap scum The longer in between scrubs you go, the more labor intensive this task can become.

Shower Scrubbing Maintenance Schedule

I highly recommend that you scrub your shower/tub once every 2-4 weeks in a home with everyday shower usage. With a regular scheduled maintenance routine, you’ll realize the benefits of an easier to manage shower.

Allot extra time for a deeper cleaning if you have a less frequent cleaning routine, since soap scum can be harder to remove the longer it sits.

Cleaning frequency might depend on the number of people you live with, living habits, and pets. Take this into consideration when choosing a cleaning schedule that works best for you and the needs of your household.
