Maintenance Tasks to Consider When Moving into a Larger Home

If you’re moving into a significantly larger home than before, something to consider is the upkeep and maintenance of the home.

Many factors can impact the time it will take to maintain a larger home. This might include the size and layout, quantity of people, age of the home, lifestyle habits, systems that you have in place, and the specific needs of your household.

Cleaning Systems & Maintenance for Larger Homes

The larger the space, the more time it will take to clean it. This is a task at minimum needs to be done fully once per month. Most of our cleaning clients in Portland, who have larger spaces have us come weekly, for peace of mind. Not every surface is cleaned weekly, but there are certain tasks that help with general upkeep that need to be done weekly such as kitchens, bathrooms, tidying up, and floors.

Landscaping and Yardwork

Depending on the size of your overall property, the amount of upkeep for groundskeeping can vary. Many people with larger properties have their landscaping team do a variety of tasks throughout the year as different projects are needed in different seasons. Spring an fall there is more growth, which means more frequent mowing, weed control, and plant care.

General Contractor / Handyman Tasks

Regardless of whether you live in a small or large home, or even a condo, you’ll want to have a resource for a general contractor or handyman to have on speed dial when you need something fixed or help in putting up decor. Just as cleaning takes longer in a larger space, there will likely be more tasks that come up and sometimes might even be an emergency. Having an action / backup plan in the event that you need to find someone to come help in a pinch, is important. Do your research in advance.

Tidying Up and Organization

Tidying up can be a continuous process in a larger home and it can be a long walk across the house just to find that one item you’re trying to find. There are professional organizers that can come help set up an organizational system that works for you and then can come back on a regular basis to refresh your space.

There are general tasks in a home that need to be done on a regular basis that don’t necessarily fall within the category of hiring out for a general contractor or handyman, that I’d like to list in a separate category. This could be anything from changing out or ordering lightbulbs, the batteries on your keyless door lock, and so on.

If your home is large enough, I recommend creating a house management book where you write down important information that you might need, that’s all in once place.
