Home Entry Organization Ideas

When it comes to home entry organization, it’s a bit of a choose your own adventure type of deal. This is the case with anything design related. It will depend on your own personal needs and the space that you have.

It’s common for this space being sorely overlooked and it being a pain point in our home where junk, clutter, unopened mail, and a pile of shoes to take over.

I’m a big fan of systems and processes. Without it, anything goes. Which can easily lead to a high level of frustration and clutter chaos. Having a system in place creates a level of certainty around how items will flow in and out of your space.

Here’s some examples of the systems that you might want to think about for this high traffic spot in your home:

shoes

First of all, are you a shoes on or a shoes off household? Depending on what you answer, this can change your organizational process slightly. If you’re a shoes off household, you might find ways to organize your shoes outside the door (that’s covered) as well as find a dedicated place for house slippers.

I highly recommend steering away from organizational systems where the shoes get thrown in a basket, however, because shoes tend to pile up. It’s important to be able to see everything.

👠 this RARZOE Rattan Shoe Cabinet holds 24 pairs of shoes but keeps things hidden with this flip down design.

👟 or try this Tribesigns Shoe Cabinet which has doors to keep it hidden and interior shelves - it holds 16 Pairs of shoes and even has an LED light.

👞 I like the height on this TIYASE Shoe Cabinet (depending on your home design) and it holds 20 pairs of shoes. Depending on your space, you might opt for two of them.

👢for a more minimal open design, this PETKABOO 2 Tier Shoe Bench looks great in an entryway and provides a sitting space

coats, purses, backpacks, and random clutter

These are more items that tend to pile up over time. This might simply require some maintenance every time you do your tidy/clean routine and clear the entry area up by putting personal items away in bedrooms, etc.

Installing hooks on the wall or having a coat rack works well. I’ve seen some people install cubbies for each of their family members, but this will be dependent upon if you have the space for it.

🧥 this UOCO Coat Hook Rail is beautifully designed for a home entry space

👚 individual hooks can provide a bit more flexibility on placement like this Black Walnut Wood Black Metal Hook

👜 or these ZEYU Folding Coat Hooks are low profile and stay out of the way when not in use

👕 If you don’t want to install hooks on the wall, opt for a freestanding coat rack like this HKaikzo Double-pole Coat Rack

mail

This is something that tends to be an afterthought, but considering a system for mail is an important part of home entry organization. I recommend having an “inbox” for each person so that you can deposit respective mail into an inbox which can be handled at a later time.

Personally, I like to open all mail as I receive it and get rid of junk mail and envelopes mail comes in which helps reduce the amount of paper that can build up over time. It’s way less overwhelming to see a small stack of paper than it is to see a large stack of cluttered papers.

📨 this Merely Home Clear Acrylic Wall File Organizer is beautiful and low profile - try installing one of these on the wall for each person’s mail.

📬 if you prefer something that can sit on an entry table or have the flexibility of being mounted, this MaxGear Hanging Wall File Organizer can do either/or.

📩 this Acrimet Horizontal Triple File Folder Holder is a tiered holder easily shows everyone’s mail for grabs

home entry design can meet both form and function with a little bit of thought.
